First Steps Women’s Centre celebrated International Women’s Day on 5th March 2026

International Womens Day 2026
Delegates in attendance of the celebration of International Women’s Day on 5th March 2026.

Showcasing the Heritage Journeys Project and launch of the website and pilot portrait exhibition of women participating in the project.

It was such a joyous occasion, filled with positivity, surrounded by amazing women from all around the world as they shared their stories, experiences and together explored the richness of their cultures and traditions. FSWC is proud to be making space for the women to tell their stories of both their journeys from their homelands and of settling in Mid-Ulster.

FSWC Chair Nicola Quinn welcomed guest speakers and attendees, praised the women in their courage and resilience in adapting to their new lives and acknowledged the staff team for their commitment, energy and enthusiasm for supporting and empowering women.

Guest speakers included the Deputy Chair of Mid-Ulster Council, Denise Johnson, Professor Pat Cullen MP and Dr Sally Montgomery from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Councillor Denise Johnson explained how “by listening to and learning from one another, we inspire connection, empowerment and action in the support of women everywhere”.

Professor Pat Cullen MP, highlighted the importance of coming together as women in Mid-Ulster. “Women here come together to learn, to grow, to support each other. Some have had to leave behind everything to start a new life here. We welcome every one of you with open arms, you belong here and we need you here. When women support women connections grow stronger, voices are heard and opportunities open up”.

Dr Sally Montgomery OBE gave a captivating speech leaving the attendees spellbound as she recalled a tale of the “selkie”, the seal folk, a story popular in Irish folklore. She paralleled the story of the selkies and their stolen skins with the longing of many for one’s homeland, despite learning to adapt to wearing their “new skins” in their new countries. A compelling story of the importance of legacy and belonging.

Altogether a truly inspiring event.
